Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

Connecting scenic spots, a tourist route with magnificent views

Alpine Route. Extending 37.2 km all together, the greatest altitude difference is 1,975 m, and this is one of the best tourist routes in the world connecting 3,000 m degree mountain peaks. Nearly the entire route is inside Chubusangaku National Park, and while viewing several scenic spots including Kurobe Dam, Daikanbo, Kurobedaira, and more, it is fun to try an adventure by moving using the six different available vehicles such as the bus, cable car and ropeway, etc. Traveling between the departure point on the Nagano side, Ogizawa Station in Omachi City, and the final stop on the Toyama side, Tateyama Station in Tateyama-machi, takes six to seven hours one way, so it is a place you’ll want to go if you have substantial free time. Please be aware that cars cannot enter between Ogizawa Station and Tateyama Station. So if you come to either station by car, a service is available (for a fee) to transport your car to the opposite station. Each place is full of sightseeing spots. Bijodaira with primeval forests of huge trees over a thousand years old spread across it, Midagahara with mystical, beautiful wetlands, the heart of the Alpine region, Murodo which looks out on the grand 3,000 m Alps unbroken mountain range, and the Kurobe Dam which is renowned for being the highest in Japan are all must-see attractions! At Murodo from April until June, the largest snow wall in the world, called Yuki-no-Otani, is built, and tourists from around the world gather for an amazing scene.
