21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

A modern art museum like a park with plentiful interactive-style exhibits

21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa with collections centered on modern art. This round building constructed with the concept of “an art museum like a park opened in the city,” is nicknamed “Marubi” (the round museum) by Kanazawa City residents, and elicits affectionate calls of “cute!” With many artwork exhibits that you can really see, touch and feel, it is recognized as an area where even children can easily become familiar with modern art. Among these exhibits, “The Swimming Pool” (2004) by Leandro Erlich is very popular among the permanently installed artwork displays. Although it looks like a regular pool from a distance, it is an interesting work that looks like people walking under water when viewed from above. Inside the building is also a café and museum shop, a library that deals with specialized fine art texts, a kid’s studio and a tea room, etc. Other than the introduction to modern art exhibit that is displayed regularly, citizen art projects and programs such as picture book reading offered by staff members are also held, so no matter how often you visit the museum you won’t grow tired of it. Also, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa has received high reviews, and the architects Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA who designed the building received the Golden Lion prize at the 9th International Architecture Exhibition at the 2004 Venice Biennale of Architecture. The building is gaining attention from around the world as a famous architectural structure. Also, leaflets guiding you through the museum are provided in English, French, Spanish, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, so please feel at ease.
