Counted as one of Japan’s three most famous gardens along with Mito Kairakuen Garden and Okayama Korakuen Garden, this is a famous sightseeing spot located in the heart of Kanazawa City. This garden is named “Kenroku-en” as a shorthand expression for the “six winning attributes (vast space, tranquility, human strength, antiquity, water fountains and spectacular views)”. Delving deeper into the history, this garden made by many generations of the Kaga domain lords was famous as a representative of the Daimyo (feudal lord) gardens of the Edo period. Later on in the Meiji period, it was released from being a “garden for lords” and became a “garden for the city residents.” Then in 1985, it was designated as a national Special Place of Scenic Beauty. Even now that beautiful garden is protected, and elements of the “go-round style” making use of the vast expanse of land have been incorporated. With gardening techniques of various ages drawn upon, the garden is truly something special. Even more than the beauty of the lush scenery of the expansive trees, the Hokuriku region’s winter landscape of “snow suspenders” put in place to protect the trees from damage from heavy snow is a must-see. In winter many travelers visit with the goal of seeing this view. Also, light-ups are held four times per year, and the mystical night garden is spectacular too. Furthermore, pamphlets in nine foreign languages are also available for tourists from overseas.
