Inuyama Castle

Inuyama Castle

A castle and National Treasure, with Japan’s oldest existing castle tower, that conveys history to the present

Inuyama Castle was built by Oda Nobunaga’s uncle, Oda Nobuyasu. Famous for having Japan’s oldest existing wooden castle tower, it was even designated as a National Treasure in 1935. When you enter the castle, pay attention to the wooden construction that shapes history even now! With large amounts of leftover lumber left everywhere around the castle from the time of construction such as wooden beams supporting steeply jutting stairs and castle towers, the floor creaks as you walk across it, and you can experience history with all of your five senses! Furthermore, from the castle tower, if the weather is good, maybe you can even enjoy seeing the impressive view of Mt. Ontake, Gifu Castle, and the skyscrapers around Nagoya Station? Famous as a viewing spot for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, we recommend the breathtaking beauty of the contrast between the white castle walls and Japan’s four gorgeous distinct seasons. Also, since the castle is lit up at night, the illuminated rising castle towers are also exceptional. In the surrounding area, old buildings remain from the old castle town, and besides enjoying a snack as you stroll through the streets or time in a café, you can also come here in a kimono for a walk. Inuyama Festival featuring a large collection of majestic floats is held every April, so definitely check it out!
